2011 FLOODS

In 2011 Hurricane Irene caused widespread flooding in the North East.  Though many communities seemed to lose everything, they are starting to rebuild.  Hear the stories of the disaster and recovery from our friends and neighbors.

Owego Recovery Update

A number of Owego folks continue to be engaged in helping flood victims recover from this disaster. Some are helping to renovate a flood victim’s home.  Others are volunteers working with the Tioga Area Resource Partnership (TARP) and Tioga Opportunities, Inc. manage a warehouse for receiving and dispensing donations of used furniture and appliances for flood victim recovery.  Donations have been coming from all over western New York state, i.e., Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Ithaca, as well as from the Tioga County community.

Endicott Community Rededication Service

Six-months after the devastating flood that ravaged the Southern-Tier area of Upstate New York and in particularly the communities of Endicott and Owego, the Endicott Community Church takes time to give God Praise in a Celebration Weekend.  The weekend began Friday evening with a praise and worship concert by Eastern Nazarene College Gospel Choir.  Saturday evening, following a lovely reception and time of fellowship, was a time of expressing thanks and appreciation to the many individuals/groups that helped in the rebuilding process as well as opportunity to share how God had used the flood to change their lives.  The theme song for the weekend was “Bring the Rain” by Bart Millard, Barry Graul, Jim Bryson, Nathan Cochran, Mike Scheuchzer and Robby Shaffer.

Lyrics to Bring the Rain

I can count a million times people asking me
How I can praise You with all that I’ve gone through
The question just amazes me can circumstance possibly
Change who I forever am in You

Chorus
So I pray bring me joy bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there’ll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that’s what it takes to praise You
Jesus bring the rain
Maybe since my life was changed long before these rainy days
It’s never really ever crossed my mind
To turn my back on You oh Lord my only shelter from the storm
But instead I draw closer through these times
I am Yours regardless of the clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me by suffering Your destiny
So tell me what’s a little rain

Holy holy holy
Holy holy holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
And I forever sing (Ev’rybody singin’)

The Sunday Morning Worship Service was a service of re-dedication of the completed newly remolded facilities.  A fitting moment in the service was the reminder that we exist to reach people for Christ and make disciples as five confirmed their faith through the sacrament of baptism.  What an exciting celebration service reminding us again that God is the God of recovery and restoration.  The congregation stood and with passion was able to sing with confidence and assurance. . .

Never Once by Matt Redman, Jason Ingram and Tim Wanstall

Standing on this mountaintop
Looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step You were with us

Kneeling on this battleground
Seeing just how much You’ve done
Knowing every victory was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our heats can say
Yes our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful God You are faithful
You are faithful God You are faithful

Ligth the Owego Night

The Owego Church reached out to it's community this Christmas with a message of love, hope and alkaline powered candles.  The Owego Church has been a beacon of hope and higher ground since the devastating floods consumed nearly three quarters of the town.

Update on the Flooding in Endicott

I am so grateful for all the love and support from our District family. - Rev. Dan Eddings

As we prepare for thanksgiving I wanted to post a quick update and share just a few of the many things I am thankful for. Today as I sit typing this update I am back in my office and it is almost completely rebuilt. I always knew I had a great office; I just never realized how critical it was to me to have a place to really focus and work. The educational wing of the church has all the walls up and painted. The carpet is coming on Tuesday and should take about two days to do. It is hard to believe that less than 3 months ago today we were under 5-feet of water. The foyer and the sanctuary are coming along great and should be done in the next couple of weeks. The baptistery is here and will be wired and plumbed next week. The new sound system will be installed next week and we will be able to finish putting the walls back together in there. We have ordered the chairs and expect them around Christmas. Overall we have made great progress in such a short period of time. I am so thankful for Bruce and Nancy Smith that have done so much of the work, along with Bill Green and Don Dillenbeck. Without these four people we would be WAY behind where we are. They are special blessings not only to this church, but to me personally as well. The finances are tight to say the least, but God has and will continue to provide.
I am also thankful for the ways that God has been providing for me and my family during these days as well. As some of you know the decision was made that we would begin to receive a housing allowance and purchase a home of our own in the area. This is something Deb and I have never done before, and I will be in no hurry to do it again in this lifetime. We found a very nice home up on the hill and went through the process of bidding, signing contract and applying for a mortgage. We had hoped to be in the house by now, but the Lord has not opened that door yet. The Lord has provided both a great realtor and mortgage consultant and I know that these two are a provision from the Lord and I am thankful for them and all they are doing on our behalf. We believe that God has provided this house and we would ask for your prayers as we continue to wait on the mortgage company. I am especially thankful for the family we have been living with. Not only have the Thompsons given us shelter in our time of need, they are away for the weekend and have allowed us to live together as a family for a few days. To some it may not seem like much, but I see it as a wonderful blessing and am thankful for even a few days together.
More than all of these things, I am so grateful for the many friends who have called, e-mail, texted, sent financial assistance, listened and most important prayed. Deb and I were talking yesterday and as we talked we both mentioned how blessed we are to have such a loving and supportive group of friends surrounding us. God has used you and especially your prayers to keep us going when it would have been easy to throw up our hands and quit. I am more convinced than ever that God is in control and He has a plan both for my family and our church. It is a plan that, as one friend recently told me, will blow the doors off this church. Please continue to pray not only for my family and this church, but also for the hundreds of people that are still recovering and rebuilding. Pray that God will be seen, heard and made known in these days and above all else that He would be glorified!
