Letter from the D.S.
In Luke chapter 11, Luke focuses on a series of practical teachings concerning prayer, and spiritual development. In the midst of His teaching Luke records that a woman impressed with Jesus speaks out a blessing. She loudly proclaims, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” Jesus responds with the following, “More so, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Jesus was in effect saying faith possessed must become faith expressed in order for God’s purpose for each follower to be realized in their life. Faith is not something we possess; it is a life that is lived. James notes this truth as he writes, “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith and yet does not live it…show me your faith without your demonstration in life and I will show you my faith by the way I live.
Authentic faith changes things. It is the source of true transformation. Thus we must not settle for passing on the knowledge of God’s word apart from also emphasizing obedience to God’s word.
To be missional is to live the faith in obedience to God’s word.
